Firemen :)

Well we had our last leadership class for 2006 yesterday. This was a very fun and interesting class. The class was held at the Oklahoma City Firemen Training Facility. After we arrived we had three separate firemen speak about their area of expertise.
The first speaker talked to us about the general job description of being an OKC fireman. OKC firemen respond to about 1 emergency call every 8 minutes! These calls range from people being locked out of their cars or homes to suspicious materials to of course fires. There are about 800 to 900 firemen for the oklahoma city area. That may sound like a lot, but it really isn't when you consider the amount of area they cover and all the duties they perform.
The second one was about the medical part of being an OKC firemen. All the firemen must be certified as and EMT or higher. They are usually the first responders to an emergency so they need to be able to stabilze any one who needs medical attention.
The third speaker spoke about the special operations program. The special operations teams handle search and rescue, hazmat and water rescue. After hearing about what all they do I think they really should be called emergency response teams instead of firemen! I definitely have a new found respect and appreciation for all the firemen. Thank you!

On another note we're going to get our first snowfall of the season today! Brrr, It's gotten really cold. We'll probably start getting sleet, snow and ice here in a couple of hours. heh, Maybe the office will be closed tomorrow. If the schools are closed then we are too, so I'll just have to watch the news.
